Official Table Tennis Rules
Two questions many beginners have are: what are the official table tennis rules and where can I find them?
These are good questions and they are easy to answer. The official table tennis rules are also called the Laws of Table Tennis, depending on who you are talking to. It is important to understand that both names mean the same thing. It is also important to understand that ping pong and table tennis are usually considered the same game or sport. With that in mind, the official table tennis rules would also apply if you were playing ping pong.
A copy of the official table tennis rules can be found online. It is advisable that you download a copy and take some time reading over them. There are some rules that may not be as important to you as others, but it is always a good idea to have at least some understanding of the various subjects that are covered in the official table tennis rules book.
Contained within the official table tennis rules are some issues that all players should know and understand. For example, the racket must be black on one side of the blade, and red on the other.
In addition, the rubbers that you use on your racket must be authorized by the ITTF (International Table Tennis Federation). More on this subject is contained within the official table tennis rules.
The official table tennis rules also dictate that the top of the net, along its entire length, be 15.25 cm above the playing surface. This includes both sides and the center of the net.
The official table tennis rules spend a lot of time on the service rules. This is one area where a lot of tweaking and changing has taken place and it is this area that you should spend time studying as serving the ball and receiving the ball are two of the most important aspects of actually playing the game.
You should try to keep in mind that the intention of the service rules is to give the receiver the ability to see the ball at all times in order to have a fair chance of returning the ball.
There are many other issues contained in the official table tennis rules booklet and you should try to familiarize yourself with as many as possible. It is also a good idea to have a copy on hand during play in order to settle any disputes that may occur.
