Racquetball

Racquetball is a fast paced game that has gained a lot of popularity over the last decade or so. In general, racquetball is a game that is played with racquets and a hollow rubber ball on an indoor or outdoor court.

The game was conceived in 1948 and it incorporates rules from squash and handball. It differs than other racquet sports such as tennis or badminton in that it allows the use of the walls, floor, and ceiling of the court.

Racquetball is normally played by two opposing players, though variations of three and four players are also commonly played. Games involving two players are called singles; games with more than two players have other titles such as Ironman or Cut Throat. Four player games are called doubles.

It wasn't until 1969 and with the assistance of Robert W. Kendler, who at the time was the president and founder of the U.S. Handball Association (USHA), that the International Racquetball Association (IRA) was founded. This particular name was thought up by professional tennis player Bob McInerny. It was in this same year that the IRA assumed responsibility from the national championship from the National Paddle Rackets Association.

The IRA has continued to be the dominant organizing force within racquetball and it is recognized by the United States Olympic Committee as the U.S. national governing body for racquetball.

The popularity of racquetball really boomed during the 1970's. By 1974 there were over 3 million players. It was because of this increase in popularity that so many gyms began putting in regulation racquetball courts. However, as more people began to become interested in other gym activities such as aerobic classes and weight lifting, many gyms took out the racquetball courts to free up space. It is estimated that there are about 5 million racquetball players in the US today.

What this means to the average racquetball player is that finding a regulation court may be a challenging task, but there are courts in most areas, if you only search them out.
