Badminton Equipment

Badminton equipment comes in two rather broad categories: non-professional and professional. As you might imagine, the professional level badminton equipment can be expensive and it can be hard to find. On the other hand, less than professional level gear can be found easily and affordably.

The basic equipment includes: nets, racquets (rackets), shuttlecocks or birdies, shoes, and, of course, a court. The use of a regulation court is recommended, but not always necessary.

Nets: You can buy badminton equipment as a kit or set, and these sets will usually include a net. It will be necessary for you to place the net at the correct height. The length of the net will be already set for you.

Racquets: One of the most important pieces of badminton equipment is the racquets, sometimes spelled rackets. Of the pieces of gear that are available for this sport, these can be the most expensive items associated with the game if you buy a top level brand or model. You do not, however, have to buy an expensive racquet in order to play and enjoy the game. Many racquets are very affordable and some will even come in sets or two or sets of four, thus reducing the overall cost of each.

Shuttlecocks: These are often called birdies. They are the feathered devices that the players hit over the net. As with racquets, these can either be somewhat expensive or very affordable, depending on the level of quality that you purchase. For most people, the inexpensive type is fine for backyard or beach play. For competition play, a more precise version is available.

Shoes: Badminton can be played in everyday sneakers but for competition level play it is recommended that the player's badminton equipment bag include a good pair of athletic shoes. The bottom surface of the shoes will be important in that the player needs to have a good grip to the floor in order to move and stop as desired. Some players will need ankle support as well.

Courts: As mentioned above, badminton equipment would also include the use of a regulation court. If play can be conducted on a regulation court, then that is what should happen. But many times, a regulation court cannot be found. In that case, players should mark out a court as best as possible. It is important that the side lines and back lines be clearly marked so as to avoid arguments between players.

Badminton equipment is so affordable that anyone who wishes to play this fast and exciting game can do so. This is a game that the whole family can enjoy.
