Racquet Sports
Racquet sports have been around for a long time. Some of the more popular ones, such as tennis, have been around for centuries. Others, such as table tennis or ping pong, are more modern.
The term racquet sports can mean different things, however, depending on the game that you are talking about. There are some racquet sports that are traditionally played indoors. Table tennis would fall into that category, while other games are played outdoors, such as badminton. Today, however, many of these indoor and outdoor games can be played wherever the players wish.
Many of the racquet sports require a court of some kind. Racquetball and tennis both use courts, usually laid out in some pre-approved manner. Other racquet sports such as table tennis or ping pong use a table that acts as the court. Many of these sports utilize a net which separates the two sides of the court or table, but not all require the use of a net.
One thing that all racquet sports have in common is that they use racquets or paddles. A racquet (or racket) is a sports implement consisting of a handled frame with an open hoop across which a network of cord is stretched. It is used for striking a ball in such games as squash, tennis, racquetball, and badminton.
Other games such as ping pong, table tennis, and pickleball use what would better be known as a paddles. They do not have the inner stringing network that true racquets use. The paddles are usually much smaller in size as well.
All of the games that fall under the heading of racquet sports have some form of rules. Most of the games also have some form of governing body that dictates what the rules will be and how they will be applied. In some racquet sports, the rules can be somewhat lengthy. An example of this would table tennis. Other games have fairly easy to understand and follow rules. An example of this might be the game pickleball.
Many of the racquet sports were invented in other lands and have lost some of their cultural appeal over time. An exception to this would be the game Jai-Alai, which is a very popular game, especially in places like Florida.
Perhaps the biggest appeal to racquet sports is that they are fun to play. As a new player begins to play more, his or her skill level will increase and, while the games are fun to play, they can also be very challenging.
